Senegal

Senegal is the western tip of the African continent, and the country where Afro Daily Village begins. Our filming is concentrated in the south-east — Upper Casamance and the Kolda region — where villages live at the rhythm of the rains, the weekly markets and the seasons of the harvest.

A crossroads town in Upper Casamance, sixty kilometres from the Guinea-Bissau border, where four language communities live side by side and one of West Africa's great weekly markets takes over the streets every Wednesday.

In Diaobé, the Kankurang still walks

Every hivernage — the West African rainy season — a figure clothed in the red fibre of the faara tree comes out into the Manding villages of Senegal and Gambia, in the season of the circumcisions. UNESCO has listed the rite since 2008 — and warned, in the same breath, that it is wearing thin. On 18 September, in Diaobé, the whole neighbourhood came out to meet him.
